When it comes to explaining group differences in socioeconomic status, evidence strongly supports the “cognitive meritocracy” theory. Some groups have higher SES primarily because they have higher average cognitive ability; other groups have lower SES primarily because they have lower average cognitive ability. Of course, IQ isn’t the only factor explaining group differences in SES, but it’s arguably the most important one.
